Onele's Story Ever since I was a child. I've been fascinated by the world of code. But my journey didn't start in a classroom or with a text book. It started in front of a TV screen watching an animated series called "Reboot". As an 8 year old. I didn't fully understand what coding was, but Reboot presented in a way that made it feel magical and powerful. The characters literarily lived inside a computer system and they fought off viruses like Megabyte and Hexadecimal. I remember being so curious about why the villain was named Hexadecimal; Later realizing that it was a reference to colour codes used in programming. What fascinated me even more was how their powers were connected to the systems code ( commands, logic even syntax ). There was a scene where characters would "Reboot" into games or defend their city using functions and code based logic. This show made something as complex as syntax and systems feel understandable to my young mind. It was the spark that ignited my curiosity. The idea that code was power and with the right knowledge , you could shape entire worlds. That early fascination led me to love films like " Algorithm: The Hacker and any story that featured "The Tech Guy": The one always behind the scenes, unnoticed, underestimated but crucial. The more I watched, the more I realized that this person isn't just supporting the mission. They ate the mission. Without their skills. The plan wouldn't exist. I wanted to be that person. The one with the quiet superpower. I started searching for ways to learn how to code, but around 2010( After I graduated from High school) the only schools I could find offering programming were private institutions like Vega School of Brand Leadership and CTI Education Group. Unfortunately, the tuition fees where far beyond what my parents could afford. Coding slowly turned from a dream to a distant wish. Still, I didn't give up. I turned to the internet, piecing things together through YouTube channels like Programming with Mosh and online tutorials like We3 Schools . I even started teaching myself how GitHub works and how it fits in the bigger picture of development. But learning this way has been slow and at time, overwhelming. I wanted guidance. I needed structure. Then I discovered SheCodes and everything changed. This is the opportunity I have been hoping for. What I love most about SheCodes is how it's empowering women to step into an industry that has been male-dominated for so long. They are not teaching us to compete because, for me. It's not about competition. It's about being myself and doing what I love. SheCodes is more than a course: It's a door that I've spent years trying to open. And now. I'm ready to walk through it.

🙋‍♀️ Onele's Motivation

My motivation for learning to code with SheCodes is deeply personal. I want to improve my job skills so that I can create a better life for my family. Not just financially but meaningfully. I've always been drawn to people who have often been forgotten by society. Especially the deaf community. My Aunt became deaf after falling ill during childhood, and though her, I've seen the challenges faced by those living with a disability in a world that often overlooks them. This experience opened my heart and mind to the reality that so many people are sidelined simply because they communicate differently. I want to change that. I want to learn how to code so I can build inclusive technologies: Apps and platforms that empower people who have long been excluded, giving them a space to be seen, heard and valued. More than that, I want to teach deaf people how to code. Coding doesn't discriminate- It doesn't care about how you hear speak or move. It only needs someone who can think critically, analyze problems and create solutions. And I know the deaf community is full of brilliant minds that just need access and opportunity. I also want to pass this knowledge onto my son. He is still young and his mind is still curious and open. He is already showing an interest in AI, Robotics and app development. His favorite content right now is, Alan Bakers Animation on YouTube which introduces concepts like coding, syntax, firewalls and viruses in fun and simple ways. He is also a big fan of Robot Wars and BattleBots where robots are designed and brought to life for head-to-head competitions. These shows spark creativity and problem-solving and I want to nature that spark by guiding him early so that he can build, experiment and maybe even create apps that he can sell or use in real-word projects one day. Tech is the future. By learning code, I hope to build tools that solve problems, make life easier for others, and bring underrepresented communities, into the digital space, where they too, can thrive. SheCodes is the opportunity I have been waiting for. To uplift my family, empower others, and leave a legacy through purpose driven technology.

🤹‍♀️ Onele's Hobbies

I love storytelling in all its forms; Whether through writing short stories, watching thought-provoking Sci-fi, or diving into animated series that blend creativity with tech. I enjoy exploring the world of AI, app design concepts, and learning new coding tricks just for fun. I also love spending time with my son, especially when we watch Robot Wars or do DIY projects together, where we try and test different methods of making things like slime, using different methods. Or testing out science experiments involving things like Mentos and Coke to see if the outcome will be like that in the videos we see on YouTube. It's our version of fun and learning combined. Creativity and curiosity drive most of what I do in my free time.

The Delac Foundation Mission

Women hold only 25% of coding jobs and earn 30% less than men. In many developing countries, over 65% of women lack bank accounts, making it difficult to invest in their education.

The Delac Foundation is changing that. We provide women in developing countries with free coding education, equipping them with the skills to build a better future. In partnership with SheCodes, we offer training in product development, design, and management, empowering women to thrive in the tech industry.
