Nicole's Story I first became interested in coding towards the end of high school. I was struggling to figure out what I wanted to pursue but I knew that learning to code would open multiple doors of opportunity. At the time I was however, extremely intimidated by the prospect of learning the skill because of the reputation it has for being challenging. I have come a long way since and I have taken the initiative to try it out by following YouTube courses and lessons. Given how quickly tech was and is evolving I also didn't want to fall behind and become irrelevant in such a fast-paced world. Coding presented itself as a way to stay adaptable.

🙋‍♀️ Nicole's Motivation

I'm interested in learning difficult skills that will help me stay competitive in today's job market especially in the fields of social work and public health. Unfortunately, not many organizations offer courses that are financially accessible and customized for women. Personal growth aside, I am deeply driven by my desire to be financially independent of my parents who I am currently reliant on as that would decrease the burden they carry and allow them to save more money, invest and build up retirement funds. I would like to not only be financially self-sufficient, but also in a position where I can help my parents out financially and contribute to my siblings' education, providing them with better opportunities than those that have been awarded to me. Even if I am unable still to get an in-office job I recognize that having coding as one of my skills will increase my chances of getting a remote job. I have also been encouraged by these around me who have entered into tech to learn to code or in some way get involved in tech. their testimonies are strengthened by what I've seen, how their lives have improved even if just marginally because of this skill. I'd like to learn how I can use coding as a future social worker and grow my skills beyond what I know about social work. I am very passionate about making a greater impact in various fields such as and other social development In Zimbabwe by creating efficient systems and improving on those that exist already given how poor and underdeveloped social support and public health systems are in the country.

🤹‍♀️ Nicole's Hobbies

I enjoy leisurely reading and partaking in activities or experiences that either add to my knowledge or are simply push me out of my comfort zone. I am currently learning to play tennis, and if I'm not going to the gym then you might catch me out on the sidewalk on a run, only in the late afternoon, of course. When the opportunity presents itself, I also like to work on my chess skills by playing opponents who are ideally, not my brother and preferably more experienced than I am.

The Delac Foundation Mission

Women hold only 25% of coding jobs and earn 30% less than men. In many developing countries, over 65% of women lack bank accounts, making it difficult to invest in their education.

The Delac Foundation is changing that. We provide women in developing countries with free coding education, equipping them with the skills to build a better future. In partnership with SheCodes, we offer training in product development, design, and management, empowering women to thrive in the tech industry.
