An's Story When you hear the phrase “How to train your dragon”, most will think of the hit animated movie, but for me, it was the name of my first coding book that sparked my passion with coding. When I started grade 10, I learned C++ as a mandatory subject, with absolutely no background in coding. As we didn’t have access to computer labs very often, we mostly learned the syllabus by ourselves and with the help of our peers. I remember struggling with every single practice test in the book. It seemed like my “dragon” was not an easy one to tame. But the more I spend time exploring through the problems, the more I am interested in the application of computer science in real life, not just these textbooks problems.

🙋‍♀️ An's Motivation

I came across the She Codes Foundation in a Facebook group, and immediately signed up for the application, but am too afraid that I might not be good enough to apply. But every week, I read through the emails, finding successful She Codes alumni and checking out applications from others who are applying from around the world. And those stories inspired me to start learning how to code, but this time not on my own, but with She Codes.

🤹‍♀️ An's Hobbies

“Signed: Turtle with rabbit ears”. This endearing signature has been with me since I started my school’s blog, where I jot down trivial but endearing things about our small school. It’s funny how many times I’ve heard readers gathering evidence and guessing the person behind this “quirky” name. It all started when I was having lunch near the basketball court, when a flower dropped on my hair. I did not know spring had already rolled around the corner. Everyday at school, I found little anecdotes that made my high school experience so wholesome. And I wanted to inspire others to feel the same way. My little blog never lacks writings, pictures of the small things such as us picking green mangoes in the school yard. Especially during the pandemic, my page has been a place where we flashback on the thrill of going to school in person. Six months ago, I didn't even know if I could maintain the blog, let alone learn how to single-handedly design, shoot and edit video. Now, my little “turtle” has 2000 followers - including many alumni and 2 projects specifically for freshmen to get to know our school, as they don’t have a chance to start school in person yet. My joy is to relish the very moment I am in and inspire others to do the same. I am a turtle, who is slowly improving herself with new skills, so with her long ears, she can hear others are willing to do the same.

The Delac Foundation Mission

Women hold only 25% of coding jobs and earn 30% less than men. In many developing countries, over 65% of women lack bank accounts, making it difficult to invest in their education.

The Delac Foundation is changing that. We provide women in developing countries with free coding education, equipping them with the skills to build a better future. In partnership with SheCodes, we offer training in product development, design, and management, empowering women to thrive in the tech industry.
